After the reception Susan and I headed for the Girl’s Dorm.
Isn’t this a beautiful place to host a party? Now you know
why Susan and I always stay here when we visit Rabun County.
While the reception was going on Bev and Vi were setting out the
refreshments.
I think Santa Claus (AKA John Rogers '56) can give testimony to all
the good
food, with Angie's fresh strawberry and chocolate pecan pies and
Carolyn's
fudge to choose from.
A very SPECIAL moment of the night was when Phil Landers ’58 and
his wife Linda arrived. As you remember in DT #10, I had mentioned
that Phil and Beverly had spent many long hours on the telephone catching
up, and both were looking forward to seeing each other after forty-three
years. I think the next two pictures tell it all. It was a
very special moment for all of us to see the joy and happiness on each
of their faces.
Happy Birthday, Janie!
What do you think about this big birthday party we planned just
for you? Terre Kelly, wife of Donald Kelly ‘52, prepared the
Hummingbird cake for Janie.
Following are several pictures that will show the fun we had at the
party.

It was a wonderful evening. After our guests left, Susan, Beverly,
Viola,
Ann, and I turned in for the night. We had a big day ahead
of
us.
SATURDAY JUNE 9TH
Saturday morning found us bright and early back at the Gap Grill
for registration duty. (We had to drag Susan with us, as she isn’t used
to getting up that early.)
Ann, Dale, Susan, Angie, Linda
One of the first persons we saw Saturday morning was Morris Brown,
former faculty member.
Also coming by Saturday morning was Alumni Trustee Vernon Wright
’60
and his wife Dottie Hines Wright ’60.
After registration we all gathered at the berry patch for our annual
meeting to honor our distinguished faculty and staff with their awards,
announcement of Alumni Association officers, report of alumni projects,
etc.
Receiving special recognition was the decade of the 50’s who had
the greatest attendance of any decade. Also, special recognition went to
the Class of 1951 who was celebrating their 50th class reunion.
Some of the award recipients were:
Outstanding Alumnus Award: Morris Brown
Honorary Alumnus Award went to Janie Owens, who was also officially
made Alumni Director.
[We always accepted Janie as an "alum" - we just adopted her into
the 1950's decade]

After the meeting we had a wonderful lunch of barbecue, baked beans,
salads, rolls and all the trimmings. Another treat that we always
look forward to is ice cream provided by Jimmy Moore ’57 from his Spring
Ridge Creamery. We were not disappointed. Thank you, Jimmy,
not only for the ice cream but also for refusing payment from Janie and
asking her to add your fee of $120.00 to the archives fund donation.
Saturday Night 1950’s Cookout and Gabfest.
The big night arrived. We had approximately 130 people attend
the 50’s cookout at Estatoah Falls. Several people who had not attended
our annual meeting on campus came for the picnic. We had more than
20 people who attended Homecoming for the first time and several more that
had not attended in 15 or 20 years. What a terrific time we all had.
We were all kids again with no chaperones to watch over us!
We would like to thank Bill Kelly ’55, his wife Jean and all the
helpers ( Bruce Hopper ’55, Hubert Darnell ’55 and Bea, Gene Vinson
’55, Bob Welden ’55, just to name a few) who volunteered to help set up,
prepare, and cook the food. Also, thanks for all the wonderful desserts
that were made by the “community students”. Thank you, ladies, it
was greatly enjoyed by all.
Following are a sample of pictures showing what a great time everyone
had.

You may notice that I am holding a "can of money". It was my
duty to collect a nominal fee from everyone for their part of the cost
of the cookout. Well, it seems when I turned the money over to Bill,
that I had collected more money than the total cost he had incurred.
Bill, in all good conscience, said he could not accept the overage. When
I insisted that Bill take all the money, he
refused, handing me $115.00 to add to the archives funds.
Thank you very much, Bill. That was a very gracious gesture on your
part.

The party's over........
During the picnic we took group class pictures from 1950-1959 which
will be posted on the site in the near future.
