Memory from Dale Denham Shaffield - class of 59 Another memory .............. is Charlie Underwood, Harold Thurmond, and Jim Lougher
Memory From Jack Ayres - Class of 51 The memories run deep and wide of that time in my life while attending RGNS. Reliving old school dazs with former schoolmates such as, 1952 clasmates, Bob Philp, Carol Dickerson D.,Twigg Smith, Cleo and all the others brings a smile.
Then finally meeting those interesting site members of the late 50's, What a treat! Susan, Bev, Dale, Harold T., Vernon W.and all of the terrific rest of you; A pleasure + Having a laugh with Mr. Brown about once returning to the campus after a bus trip, he had called me aside and in his serious voice, he informed me I was being too amorous on the bus. I knew what this new word meant, but I went straight to a dictionary to confirm it. I could never have imagined myself laughing with Mr. Brown about this disciplining. Years later at Homecoming our past catches up and we can smile and laugh with our former Teachers.
Looking forward to the First Centennial Homecoming 2003.
Memory from MY FIRST FEELING WAS I CAN BREATHE BETTER. NEXT WAS THE MEETING OF CLASSMATES I HAVEN'T SEEN IN 50 OR SO YEARS. IT WAS A WARM FEELING TO SEE ANN, MARTHA ANN, GERALD, AND SO MANY MORE. MANY MEMORIES CAME FLOODING BACK.
I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST ARRIVED FOR ENROLLMENT. I WAS INFORMED OF THE COURSES AVAILABLE AND BIBLE WAS ONE OF THEM. I WANTED TO TAKE IT BUT HAD TO TAKE WORLD HISTORY INSTEAD. GETTING BACK TO THE SUBJECT OF MY VISIT. BILLIE JOE STILES WAS A PLEASURE TO MEET. I WONDER IF HE REMEMBERS SLAPPING ME ON THE BACK WHEN I MADE GREEN-HAND. MY I COULD GO ON AND ON, BUT WAS TOLD TO KEEP IT SHORT. THE ICE CREAM WAS A DELIGHT. I HAVE NEVER TASTED BETTER. I HAVE THREE SMALL GRANDCHILDREN AND I INTEND TO TRY TO GET THEM INTERESTED IN GOING TO RABUN GAP.
WELL GUYS IT WAS SURE FUN, AND I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL NEXT
YEAR .
Memory from
I always love to return to the school and see this welcoming
sign - we can always come back to RGNS. I will remember this sign
when I am too far away to make it back in person. And you can bet that
next Homecoming this sign will be there again.
How can anyone not be moved by this scene of Estatoah Falls as it reaches the earth and flows on, it seems, forever? I have always loved the Falls and was so glad we had our 50's picnic there. I often think of this scene, a lovely memory of Rabun County and Homecoming.
Jimmy had waited a long time to see 'the bench' finally on campus. It started as a bench for Ross, then to a bench for Ross and Judy, and, finally, to a bench for all those in the Class of 1957 who have passed on. We still say that Ross would have a good seat on this bench, watching for all the girls to walk by. As it is, the scenery, with or without girls, will always be of the mountains in the distance that we all love so well. I am truly glad that the Memorial Bench came to reality. Here's to you, Ross and Judy, and all of you who are up there smiling down on us at Homecoming!
It was a great privilege for me to read the names of the deceased alumni on that Sunday morning during the Memorial Service. I remember looking down and seeing Ann Mays Brooker walking up to the front of the sanctuary with a carnation for her sister Jane Mays Snell, who had passed away during the year. It was an impressive scene, and will stay with me for a long time.
Memory from
My photographer's helper/model, Dale,
went with me. While we were there Dale enjoyed a roll in the hay ----oops!
I mean she was on a roll of hay. Sorry Dale, just a typo.
